Mud Volcanoes
Cross-section of a mud volcano
In 2001, Tekmap Consulting began work on a joint project in the Beafort Sea, with the GSC (Atlantic) and the Canadian Hydrographic Service. This project involves collecting high resolution (< 1m) multibeam data at key locations in the Beaufort Sea. The key locations include: abandoned artificial islands, gas vents, mud volcanoes (pingos), recent ice scour events, and areas of habitat interest.
This gallery includes multibeam bathymetry from an area with a number of mud volcanoes (pingos). The mud volcanoes are approximately 10-20 metres high and over 100 metres across.
For more information on the Beaufort Sea multibeam data, contact Steve Blasco at the GSC Atlantic.
