Artificial Island
In 2001, Tekmap Consulting began work on a joint project in the Beaufort Sea, with the GSC (Atlantic), and the Canadian Hydrographic Service. This project involves collecting high resolution (< 1m) multibeam data at key locations in the Beaufort Sea. The key locations include: abandoned artificial islands, gas vents, mud volcanoes (pingos), recent ice scour events, and areas of habitat interest.
This gallery includes multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data from an abandoned artificial island and dredge pit. Repetitive mapping of islands such as the one shown provides insight into how the islands degrade over time. The backscatter data provides a framework for mapping the habitat on and around the island.
For more information on the Beaufort Sea multibeam data, contact Steve Blasco at the GSC Atlantic.
